Baekseok Mission Station is an old Catholic community under Gosan Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju, located in Unju-myeon, Wanju-gun. The Korean Catholic Directory records its establishment in 1883, and the current Diocese of Jeonju mission-station list confirms that it remains under Gosan Parish.
In older Catholic historical sources, Baekseok appears under names such as Chaidolbaegi and served as one of the important early pastoral points in the Gosan area. The mission station therefore has a dual significance: it remains a local community space for rural Catholics living at a distance from the parish church, while also linking the present parish network to the early Catholic history of the Gosan and Doejae area in the late nineteenth century.
History & origins
The Korean Catholic Directory records the establishment of Baekseok Mission Station in 1883. It was formed during a period when Catholic communities were growing in the Gosan area in the late nineteenth century and was also known as Chaidolbaegi. The surrounding mountain region was one in which Catholic communities resettled after persecution and missionary priests resumed pastoral activity.
According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia, the Paris Foreign Missions priest Paul Oudot was appointed on October 10, 1891, to Gosan Chaidolbaegi, identified with present-day Baekseok, where he carried out pastoral ministry. He was transferred to Busan in 1893, around the same period that the pastoral center of the Gosan region developed into Doejae Parish. The lineage of the present Gosan Parish later continued through Doejae and Sucheong.
For this reason, Baekseok should be understood not only as a small rural mission station today but also as one of the early pastoral bases where missionary priests served Catholics before a stable parish structure was established in the Gosan area. Its continued existence under Gosan Parish links the late nineteenth-century Catholic tradition of the region with the present parish community.
