About this place

Baekja Mission Station belongs to Sinpung Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju and continues the long Catholic tradition of Yongji-myeon in Gimje. Both the current diocesan mission-station list and the Korean Catholic Directory confirm its location and affiliation with Sinpung Parish, while the national directory records its establishment in 1909.

The station is more than a place of worship at a distance from the parish church. It grew from a local Catholic community formed by migrant believers who built a village and passed on their faith. Still connected with Sinpung Parish today, Baekja preserves the traces of a rural Catholic community in Gimje and the tradition of Catholic life centered on the mission station across generations.

History & origins

According to the Diocese of Jeonju, the Catholic community in Baekja began to take shape around 1899 after the family of Joseph Yu Gunsim moved from Hamra in Iksan and other Catholics gathered around them. They supported themselves through pottery making, and as a Catholic village community developed, Baekja Mission Station was formally established in 1909 under Jeondong Parish.

As the community grew, efforts were made to secure a more stable place for worship and community life. Yu Seok-jong Stephen, a grandson of Yu Gunsim, donated land, and the Catholics themselves made bricks for a new mission building. In 1963 a new mission hall was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Peter Han Kong-ryul; diocesan records state that the community had about 180 Catholics at the time.

When Sinpung Parish was established in 1985, Baekja Mission Station was transferred from Gimje Parish, today's Yochon Parish, to the jurisdiction of Sinpung. This change shows that the Baekja community continued to preserve its identity as a mission station even as the regional parish structure was reorganized around it.
