About this place

Anseong Mission Station is a small Catholic community under Muju Parish in the Diocese of Jeonju, serving Catholics in Anseong-myeon, Muju County. The diocese's current mission-station directory lists Anseong under Muju Parish. Unlike an independent parish with a resident priest, it functions as a mission station connected to its mother parish, where local Catholics continue Mass, community prayer, and their common life of faith.

A diocesan feature describes Anseong as a meeting place where local residents and other Catholics living in the area maintained their connection to the Church. Although small in scale, the mission station is significant because the faithful themselves raised resources, built, and cared for the place while sustaining the community. Visitors should understand it first within its continuing relationship with Muju Parish.

History & origins

The Anseong mission-station community traces its beginning to 1983. According to a diocesan account, three Catholic families first gathered for mission-station prayers on the second floor of a traditional medicine shop owned by Yi Tae-seop (Barnabas). From the following year, a missionary sister from the parish visited to provide catechesis and spiritual guidance. On July 11, 1985, the pastor of Muju Parish celebrated the first Mass there, giving the community a clearer and more stable foundation.

The faithful then worked for years to secure a permanent place for the mission station. They purchased a site in June 1994, began construction in July 1995, and completed the mission-station church on December 10 of that year. The diocesan record describes Catholics personally gathering resources and raising funds to make the building possible.

The completed mission station became a place where Catholics across the broad rural area of Muju could meet regularly for prayer and continue their life of faith. Its development from a small gathering in a private home to a church built through the efforts of the faithful is the defining feature of Anseong's history and remains the foundation of the community's identity today.
