About this place

Ajung Parish belongs to District 1 of the Catholic Diocese of Jeonju and serves all of Inhu 3-dong and part of Ua-dong in Deokjin-gu, Jeonju. The diocese's current parish information identifies the 103 Korean Martyr Saints as its patrons, placing the faith of the Korean martyrs at the heart of the parish's patronal tradition.

The Ajung area developed as an urban residential district with large apartment complexes. The parish has become the local center where Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments, receive faith formation, and build community life. It is therefore more accurate to understand Ajung not simply as a church building, but as the territorial Catholic parish community serving believers in the Inhu and Ua areas.

History & origins

The diocesan chronology records the separation and establishment of Ajung Parish on August 25, 1999, while the current parish page and a 2005 diocesan bulletin give September 4, 1999 as the parish's establishment date. At the time, the Ajung area was rapidly developing with new apartment complexes and housing, and the parish emerged from Nosong-dong Parish as urban growth created the need for a new local Catholic community.

According to the diocesan bulletin, Ajung began as a daughter parish of Nosong-dong Parish and celebrated the dedication of its church on September 16, 2000, about a year after its establishment. The same source describes the parish as taking shape around the newly developing residential areas of Inhu-dong and Ua-dong.

Ajung later became established as a local parish under the patronage of the 103 Korean Martyr Saints. Its beginnings in a period of urban expansion and parish division show that today's Ajung Parish is not merely a newly built church, but a faith community formed in response to the growth of eastern Jeonju.
