About this place
Jeongja Kkotmoe Catholic Church is the church of Jeongja Kkotmoe Parish in the Paldal–Jangan District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon. The parish has St. John Mary Vianney as its patron and serves as the local center where Catholics in the Jeongja-dong area of Suwon gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and fellowship. As an urban parish that grew alongside large residential developments, it plays an important role in connecting Catholics living in apartment-centered neighborhoods into a parish community.
The present church was built after a long period in temporary worship facilities and gave the parish a stable base not only for liturgy but also for catechesis, meetings, and pastoral activities. The parish name incorporates “Kkotmoe,” a local place-name, alongside Jeongja, linking the community to the neighborhood’s lived identity. In this way the church functions as a place where Catholics in the city can meet regularly and develop a lasting sense of belonging. The diocesan record for the parish’s twenty-fifth anniversary in 2024 shows that Jeongja Kkotmoe became a stable urban parish after passing through a long period of temporary worship and the construction of a permanent church. Once the new church was secured, the parish gained not only liturgical space but also a foundation for formation and meetings, enabling faith education across generations and small-community activity within an apartment-centered neighborhood.
History & origins
Jeongja Kkotmoe Parish was established on January 26, 1999, under the name “Jeongja 2-dong Parish” in response to the expansion of residential areas around Jeongja-dong in Suwon. The parish chose St. John Mary Vianney as its patron, and in March 2001 it adopted the name “Jeongja Kkotmoe Parish,” incorporating “Kkotmoe,” a long-used local place-name.
In its early years the parish did not have a sufficiently large church or adequate auxiliary facilities. It continued parish life on a small site and in temporary worship space, enduring a prolonged shortage of a rectory, catechetical rooms, and meeting space. Securing a new church thus became a major community goal. According to diocesan records, the groundbreaking Mass for the new church was celebrated in October 2014, bringing the long preparation for construction into its active phase.
The new church was completed and dedicated on March 26, 2017. The parish could then end its extended period of temporary worship and gain stable space for liturgy, education, and community activity. In 2024 it celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of its establishment, looking back on the path from Jeongja 2-dong Parish to a community rooted in the local name Kkotmoe.
The history of Jeongja Kkotmoe Catholic Church is the story of an urban parish created as new residential districts took shape, growing despite limited facilities and eventually securing a permanent church. The change of parish name and the dedication of the new church were important turning points that established, respectively, the community’s local identity and its physical foundation. The 2014 groundbreaking account emphasizes that the problem was not merely the size of the worship space. A prolonged period in temporary facilities left the parish without sufficient rectory, catechetical, and meeting space, constraining education and pastoral activity. The church dedicated in 2017 therefore represented more than a larger place for Mass; it allowed the parish to establish a normal and stable pastoral structure. This is why the building process occupies an important place in the twenty-fifth-anniversary record: the growth of the community and the securing of a permanent church were inseparable developments.
