About this place
Jeonggwan Catholic Church is a parish in the Udong District of the Diocese of Busan, located in Jeonggwan-eup, Gijang-gun, and has St. Joseph as its patron saint. Within the residential community of Jeonggwan, it serves as a center of local Catholic life where Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and prayer gatherings take place. Because the parish stands in an area whose population expanded greatly with the development of the new town, it has the task of bringing together faithful of different generations as one parish community.
The present church building was designed to contain not only the main sanctuary but also classrooms for catechesis, meeting rooms, and other spaces needed for parish life. Jeonggwan Catholic Church is therefore more than a place for Sunday Mass: it is a setting for the faith formation of children and young people, devotional activities, small-community gatherings, and fellowship. Its dedication to St. Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family, also expresses a parish identity attentive to family and community life.
Diocesan parish records and the Korean Catholic directory identify Jeonggwan as an independent parish of the Udong District. It is therefore not a chapel dependent on a neighboring parish, but a church with its own parish community and pastoral structure, serving as the principal unit around which the ordinary ecclesial life of Catholics in Jeonggwan-eup is organized.
History & origins
Jeonggwan Parish was established on December 30, 2008, as the growth of Jeonggwan New Town created a need for an independent pastoral base for the local Catholic community. With new residential districts developing rapidly, the new parish began with the task of securing a church where the faithful could celebrate Mass regularly and sustain catechesis and community life.
Ground was broken for a new church on June 18, 2011. Construction then proceeded, and roughly four years after the parish had been founded the present church was completed. It was dedicated on November 4, 2012, in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Hwang Cheol-su of Busan. Contemporary reports describe a modern building using exposed concrete and equipped with a main sanctuary, catechetical classrooms, meeting rooms, a café, and other spaces for parish community life.
The establishment and construction of Jeonggwan Catholic Church can be understood as the diocese’s response to the rapid population growth of a newly developed town. The parish community was organized first, and then its foundation was strengthened step by step through the completion of a church able to support liturgy, education, and fellowship in one place. Jeonggwan Parish subsequently became established as the local Catholic parish of Jeonggwan-eup and has continued its pastoral and communal life within the new town.
The interval between the creation of the parish and the dedication of its church is especially revealing: the community was organized first, and a stable space for liturgy and formation followed. Even from the records that can be verified, the early history of Jeonggwan Parish shows the close interaction between the diocese’s response to demographic change and the building of a shared home for the faithful.
