About this place
Yeondong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Jeju in the western urban district, serving Yeondong and parts of Nohyeong-dong and Odeung-dong in Jeju City. The diocese identifies Our Lady of the Rosary as its patron. Located where the residential districts of Sinjeju meet the area around Halla Arboretum, the parish has a clear identity as a community established to serve a new urban population that developed in the early 2000s.
Yeondong did not begin with a complete set of permanent parish facilities. The community first celebrated Mass in temporary rented space, grew there, and later built its own church. This background highlights the parish as an urban Catholic community formed through the sustained effort of local faithful. Today it functions as a local center that connects Catholics in the Yeondong area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
History & origins
Yeondong Parish was born out of large-scale residential development and population growth in the Sinjeju area. The official diocesan history explains that a new urban district of about 6,000 households was developed around Yeondong and Nohyeong, leading to the creation of a new parish in August 2001 from territory previously served by Sinjeju and Nohyeong Parishes. At its foundation, the community began with 321 households and 962 Catholics.
The new parish initially had no dedicated church. From March 2002 until February 2005, it rented space in a commercial building where Mass was celebrated. During that period the community prepared to build a permanent church, and on January 15, 2005, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the present site with the diocesan bishop, clergy, religious, and parishioners. The plan included a prayer room and large hall below ground and catechetical rooms and the church above, showing an intention to create not merely a worship space but a parish complex for education and community life as well.
This sequence illustrates how Yeondong Parish grew: a Catholic community first emerged in a newly developed urban district, remained united in temporary premises, and then established itself through the construction of a permanent church. Diocesan sources differ on the exact day in August 2001 when the parish was separated, giving August 2 and August 9 respectively, so only the commonly supported month and year are stated here as certain.
