About this place
Udo Catholic Church is the church of Udo Quasi-Parish, which the Diocese of Jeju organizes as a pastoral jurisdiction covering the whole of Udo-myeon. The diocesan parish directory lists St. Charles as its patron, and the church serves as the central Catholic space on the island where the faithful gather for Mass and sacramental life.
The diocese’s listing of Udo as a separate quasi-parish shows that the island as a whole is treated as a distinct pastoral unit. In an area separated from the main island by sea, it supports the regular faith life of resident Catholics and also provides Catholic visitors to Udo with a place where they can connect with the local Church community.
History & origins
The Catholic community on Udo first appears in the official record in 1904, when a mission station was established under Jeju Parish, today’s Jeju Jungang Cathedral Parish. The community later experienced a painful collapse in 1911, but it was re-established as a mission station on October 26, 1947, restoring an organized Catholic presence on the island.
When the Seongsanpo mission station was raised to parish status on August 23, 1973, the Udo mission station came under Seongsanpo Parish. A new mission chapel was built on November 25, 1993, and a new church was dedicated on November 9, 2019, providing a renewed liturgical home for the island community that had continued for decades.
A major turning point came in 2021. On January 28, a priest assigned to the mission station began residing on Udo, and on April 20 of the same year the community was raised to quasi-parish status. From its beginnings as an early twentieth-century mission station, through dissolution and re-establishment, new church construction, and eventual elevation to a quasi-parish, Udo’s history shows a Catholic community repeatedly rebuilding and sustaining itself within the constraints of island life.
