About this place

Sinchang Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Jeju in the western district, serving a number of villages in the western part of Hangyeong-myeon in Jeju City. The diocese identifies Saints Peter and Paul as the parish patrons and currently lists Yongsu, Josu, and Hanwon as mission stations under its care. This structure, in which one parish is linked with several dispersed mission communities, reflects a traditional form of pastoral care suited to the widely separated villages of western Jeju.

Sinchang is therefore significant not simply as the church of one village but as a parish center connecting several smaller Catholic communities across Hangyeong-myeon. Its territory also includes areas such as Yongsu, where memories of Jeju Catholic history and Saint Andrew Kim Tae-geon are preserved. Visitors can understand Sinchang as a place where the long mission-station tradition of western Jeju grew into a parish and continues today through responsibility for surrounding mission communities.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Sinchang began to take a more definite form in 1935, when Sinchang Mission Station was established under Jeju Parish. Yongsu Mission Station followed in 1949, and Sinchang was raised to the status of a quasi-parish in April 1951. This marked the growth of a mission community in western Jeju into a more independent pastoral center.

Sinchang became a parish on June 29, 1952, but was reduced again to mission-station status when Hallim Parish was established in 1954. As the Catholic communities of the area were reorganized, Gosan Mission Station was established in 1955, Cheongsu in 1956, and Panpo and Josu in 1957. Sinchang itself was restored to parish status in April 1957. The repeated adjustments between parish and mission-station status over a short period reflect how rapidly the Church in western Jeju was organizing its pastoral network at the time.

Sinchang continued to serve as a center for several mission communities in the west. On February 22, 1990, Gosan Parish was separated from Sinchang, and Cheongsu Mission Station was transferred to the new parish. The present structure of Sinchang Parish was thus shaped by a succession of mission-station foundations, parish elevations and reorganizations, and the later separation of daughter parishes, illustrating the way rural Catholic communities in western Jeju became connected and gradually developed their own centers.
