About this place

Seongsanpo Parish belongs to the southern district of the Diocese of Jeju and today serves Seongsan-eup in Seogwipo. Its patron is Saint Dominic. Catholics in Seongsan-eup gather here for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The parish functions as the center of a local Catholic community linking the villages of the eastern coastal area within one parish territory.

Seongsanpo Parish once had a much broader territory that included Pyoseon, Gimnyeong, Udo, and Sehwa mission stations. As those local communities grew, they were successively separated or transferred to other parishes. Although the present territory is limited to Seongsan-eup, that very process shows how mission-station communities in eastern and southeastern Jeju developed into more independent parish structures. Seongsanpo Parish is therefore both a present-day local parish and an important historical link in understanding the spread of Catholic communities in eastern Jeju.

History & origins

The Seongsanpo Catholic community began with the establishment of “Seongsanpo Mission Station” under Seogwipo Parish on December 25, 1955. At that time it was not an independent parish, but a mission-station community where Catholics of the Seongsan area gathered within the broad territory of Seogwipo Parish.

As the community grew, Seongsanpo Mission Station was elevated to a parish on August 23, 1973. The new parish also took responsibility for the Pyoseon, Gimnyeong, Udo, and Sehwa mission stations, becoming a pastoral center linking several Catholic communities in eastern and southeastern Jeju.

As the local communities developed, the territory gradually became more divided. Gimnyeong Mission Station was transferred to Gwangyang Parish in 1988, and when Gimnyeong became a parish in 2004, Sehwa Mission Station also came under Gimnyeong. In 1997, Pyoseon Mission Station was elevated to a parish and separated from Seongsanpo.

Udo Mission Station was likewise elevated to a quasi-parish in 2021 and separated from Seongsanpo. As a result, Seongsanpo Parish now focuses on Seongsan-eup. This history clearly shows the development of Catholic life in eastern Jeju: a community that began as a mission station became a parish, and surrounding mission stations in turn grew into more independent communities.
