About this place
Seomun Parish belongs to the western urban district of the Diocese of Jeju and has Saint Joseph as its patron. It serves Yongdam 1, 2, and 3-dong, Ora-dong, and part of Samdo 1-dong in Jeju City, and it also has responsibility for Chuja Mission Station, located away from the main island of Jeju. Its present role is distinctive in linking ordinary parish ministry in an urban area with the Catholic life of an island mission community.
The parish is a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life, while its connection with Chuja Mission Station also illustrates how the Diocese of Jeju cares for geographically separated Catholic communities. The parish’s growth after being separated from the cathedral parish, its later separation of Shinjeju Parish, and its assumption of responsibility for Chuja Mission Station provide the background for understanding how parish territories have been adjusted as the western urban area of Jeju City developed.
History & origins
Seomun Parish was established on June 30, 1977, when it was separated from the Cathedral Jungang Parish. As Jeju City’s living areas expanded and the Catholic community grew, an independent parish was created to serve the western part of the former cathedral territory more closely.
Not long after its establishment, Seomun itself became the mother community of another parish. Shinjeju Parish was separated from Seomun on November 1, 1981. This reflected the further growth of Catholic communities toward western Jeju City and the new urban districts, leading to a more finely divided parish structure.
On February 10, 1988, responsibility for Chuja Mission Station was transferred from the cathedral parish to Seomun Parish. The parish’s pastoral reach therefore came to include not only urban neighborhoods but also the Catholic community of the Chuja islands, separated from the main island of Jeju.
In 1994, the present church was completed and dedicated on March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph. The sequence of parish foundation, the separation of Shinjeju, the transfer of Chuja Mission Station, and the construction of the new church together reflects the growth of Catholic life in western Jeju City and the corresponding adjustment of pastoral territories.
