About this place

Seogwipo Parish is a parish of the southern district of the Diocese of Jeju, with Saint Patrick as its patron. The Diocese of Jeju identifies it as the second parish established in the diocese. Today it serves all of Songsan-dong and Jeongbang-dong and parts of Donghong-dong, Topyeong-dong, Bomok-dong, and Sanghyo-dong, and it also has responsibility for Ganaan Mission Station. It is a local center where Catholics in the southern urban area of Jeju continue their life of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community.

The significance of Seogwipo Parish extends beyond being an old church in one neighborhood. Mosulpo, Seogwi Bokja, Seongsanpo, and Hyodon parishes were successively separated from this community, making it one of the historical mother parishes of several Catholic communities in southern Jeju. Its story, beginning at Hannnon and continuing through several relocations as the community grew, provides an important context for understanding the formation and expansion of Catholic life in southern Jeju.

History & origins

Seogwipo Parish was established on June 12, 1900, at Hannnon in what was then Jeongui-gun, today’s Hogeun-dong in Seogwipo. As the second parish founded in the Diocese of Jeju, its origins are directly connected with the early establishment of a permanent parish community in southern Jeju.

Around July 1902, the parish moved to Hongro, present-day Seohong-dong. It moved again on August 15, 1937, to Seogwi-ri in Seogwi-myeon, now Songsan-dong. These relocations formed part of the community’s effort to establish a more stable base amid changes in the living centers of southern Jeju.

After the Korean War period, new parishes were successively separated from Seogwipo Parish’s once broad territory. Mosulpo Parish was separated in 1958, Seogwi Bokja Parish in 1970, Seongsanpo Parish in 1973, and Hyodon Parish in 1988. Each separation reflects the growth of Catholic communities across southern and southeastern Jeju and the development of a more locally accessible pastoral structure.

Through these changes, Seogwipo Parish came to have its present territory while preserving both the tradition of the early community that began at Hannnon and the historical role of a mother parish from which several other parishes emerged.
