About this place

Seogwi Bokja Parish belongs to the southern district of the Diocese of Jeju and serves the Catholic community of Seohong-dong and part of Donghong-dong in Seogwipo. Its patron is Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon, the first Korean priest and a martyr. The parish name and patron give the community a distinctive identity rooted in the memory of the Korean Catholic martyrs within ordinary parish life in southern Jeju. The faithful gather here for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

The parish also stands within the broader story of Catholic communities in the Seogwipo area growing and being divided into new parishes. Jungmun Parish and, later, Saeseogwipo Parish were separated from it, shaping its present territory. Seogwi Bokja Parish can therefore be understood both as a local parish and as a place that reflects the continuing growth of Catholic life in the urban area of Seogwipo and the formation of new communities from an older one.

History & origins

Seogwi Bokja Parish was established on November 9, 1970, when it was separated from Seogwipo Parish. At the time it was called “Seogwipo Jungang Parish,” and its patronal title was the Savior. Its creation marked one stage in the growth of the Catholic community in the Seogwipo area, as the territory of an older parish was divided to form a new parish community.

On July 5, 1980, a new church was dedicated, the parish was renamed Seogwi Bokja Parish, and Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon became its patron. In February 1988, Jungmun Parish was separated from it, bringing another adjustment to the parish structure of southern Jeju.

A further new church was dedicated in Donghong-dong on February 7, 2004. Contemporary reporting described a complex that included not only the church itself but also spaces for education, catechesis, prayer, and other parish activities. This represented another renewal of the parish’s physical base in response to the growth of the community.

On January 1, 2022, part of the faithful were separated to form Saeseogwipo Parish, and the territory was adjusted once again. The history of Seogwi Bokja Parish is therefore closely connected with the repeated division of parish communities and the expansion of church facilities as the Catholic population and living areas of Seogwipo changed.
