About this place
Saeseogwipo Church is the church of Saeseogwipo Saint Charles de Foucauld Parish in the southern district of the Diocese of Jeju. The diocese names Saint Charles de Foucauld as its patron, and the parish serves Beophwan-dong, Seoho-dong, Hogeun-dong, the Saeseogwipo area, Gangjeong-dong, Dosun-dong, Wolpyeong-dong, and Yeongnam-dong in Seogwipo City. It is also the mother parish of Gangjeong Mission Station, linking newer residential areas of western Seogwipo with the Catholic community in Gangjeong.
A distinctive feature of the parish is that it is one of the more recently established communities of the Diocese of Jeju. Its official dedication to Saint Charles de Foucauld recalls a spirituality of following Jesus in ordinary life and remaining close to one’s neighbors. Saeseogwipo Church is both a center for Mass, the sacraments, and parish life in a newly developed urban area and a pastoral link to Gangjeong Mission Station.
History & origins
Saeseogwipo Parish began in 2021 in response to a newly developing residential area in western Seogwipo. The Diocese of Jeju announced that a new parish would be established as of January 15, 2021, describing it at the time as the diocese’s twenty-ninth parish. The current parish history explains that the first pastor arrived in January 2021 to begin preparations and that formal approval for the parish was received on April 20 of the same year. The two records can be understood as stages in the announcement and subsequent canonical and administrative organization of the new parish.
At first the parish community was organized without a completed church of its own. Administrative work was separated from Seogwi Blessed Martyrs Parish on January 1, 2022, and a groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of church construction was held on January 18. The community’s administrative independence and the building of its physical parish center thus proceeded almost simultaneously.
In mid-January 2023 the parish moved from Seogwi Blessed Martyrs Church to the new site, and on Sunday, February 5, the first Mass was celebrated in the new church. The parish later took responsibility for Gangjeong Mission Station and developed its present pastoral structure. The history of Saeseogwipo therefore offers a clear modern example of a new Jeju parish moving through preparation, approval, administrative independence, construction, and the first Mass in its own church.
