About this place
Pyoseon Catholic Church is the parish church of a parish in the Southern District of the Diocese of Jeju, with pastoral responsibility for ten villages in Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo. The Diocese of Jeju officially describes the parish community as being organized into eight local sections, and its patronal feast is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It serves as the central church for Catholics from the villages of Pyoseon-myeon who gather for Mass, the sacraments, and the shared life of the parish.
Because the parish embraces a broad rural township rather than a single village, Pyoseon Catholic Church functions as a point of connection for Catholic faith and community life across the Pyoseon area. Its dedication to the Assumption of Mary is an important marker of the parish's liturgical and devotional identity. A visit therefore offers a view of a living Catholic parish community rooted in the southeastern part of Jeju Island.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Pyoseon was originally under the pastoral jurisdiction of Seogwipo Parish. In 1964, Pyoseon mission station was established, giving local Catholics a distinct place around which to gather regularly. A mission chapel was built in 1967, providing the community with a more permanent setting for its religious life.
When Seongsanpo Parish was established on August 23, 1973, Pyoseon mission station was transferred to the new parish. The community continued its life as a mission station until February 5, 1997, when it was elevated to parish status.
This sequence shows how the Catholic community of southeastern Jeju developed from a small mission station under an older parish, acquired its own chapel, passed through a change of parish jurisdiction, and eventually became an independent parish. The present Pyoseon Parish grew from those decades of gradual consolidation.
