About this place
Namwon Catholic Church is the church of Namwon Merciful Jesus Parish in the southern district of the Diocese of Jeju. According to the official diocesan guide, the parish serves the Namwon, Hannam, Uigwi, Sumang, Taeheung, and Sinheung areas of Namwon-eup, Seogwipo, and its patronal dedication is to All Korean Martyr Saints. It is the parish center where Catholics in eastern and inland Namwon-eup gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The parish is distinctive as a local community that began as a mission station and grew through the pastoral care of neighboring parishes. Within the history of southern Jeju, where parishes gradually developed around mission communities, Namwon passed through the care of Seogwipo Parish and later Hyodon Parish before becoming independent. Today's Namwon Church is the liturgical center of the community formed through that process and remains closely connected with everyday life in Namwon-eup.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Namwon took institutional form in August 1956, when Namwon Mission Station was established under Seogwipo Parish. The community grew for many years under the pastoral care of Seogwipo, and on July 31, 1977, a new mission-station building was constructed at the present location. This gave the local Catholics a stable place for liturgy and marked an important stage in the community's development.
When Hyodon Parish was established on February 10, 1988, Namwon Mission Station was transferred to the new parish. The change reflected pastoral reorganization in southern Jeju based on the distribution of Catholics and local conditions, while the mission community itself continued.
Namwon Mission Station was finally elevated to a parish on February 5, 1997. The community had therefore grown for roughly four decades under the care of neighboring parishes before becoming independent. Today's Namwon Parish was formed on the foundation of that mission-station community and represents one of the characteristic patterns by which rural mission communities in southern Jeju developed into parishes.
