About this place
Moseulpo Church is the church of Moseulpo Parish in the western district of the Diocese of Jeju. The diocese names Our Lady of Fatima as the patron of the parish, which serves Daejeong-eup in Seogwipo City except for Sindo-ri. It is also the mother parish responsible for Mureung Mission Station, linking parish and mission communities across the broad rural and coastal landscape of southwestern Jeju.
Because the villages of Daejeong-eup are widely dispersed across the western end of the island, the parish’s meaning extends beyond a single church building. Moseulpo Church is both the place where local Catholics gather around Mass and the sacraments and a pastoral center connecting more distant mission communities. Its dedication to Our Lady of Fatima and its territorial role together explain its place within Catholic life in southwestern Jeju.
History & origins
The Catholic community of Moseulpo took a more permanent form when Moseulpo Church was completed on March 7, 1954. According to the Diocese of Jeju, the community was then incorporated as Moseulpo Mission Station under Seogwipo Parish. As the local Catholic community grew, it was elevated to an independent parish on June 29, 1958.
After becoming a parish, Moseulpo expanded the network of mission communities in the Daejeong and Andeok areas. In the same year, 1958, it established Hwasun and Mureung mission stations, and later improved both parish and mission facilities. A new parish education building was constructed in 1966, Hwasun Mission Station received a new building in August 1987, and Mureung Mission Station was rebuilt and moved to its present site in May 2002.
The parish church itself was also renewed over time, with a major remodeling completed in July 2008. The progression from mission station to parish, followed by the establishment and care of surrounding mission communities, shows how Moseulpo became a central organizing point for Catholic life in southwestern Jeju.
