About this place

Kim Giryang Catholic Church is the church of Kim Giryang Parish in the eastern urban district of the Diocese of Jeju, with Blessed Felix Peter Kim Giryang as its patron. According to the official diocesan directory, the parish serves Ido 2-dong, Ara-dong, parts of Donam-dong, Odeung-dong, and parts of Wolpyeong-dong in Jeju City. Its most distinctive identity is that both the parish name and its patron recall the Jeju native remembered as the island's first baptized Catholic and martyr.

The parish was established to serve the growing Catholic population of the expanding Ido and Ara areas, while also carrying Kim Giryang's faith and missionary spirit into ordinary parish life. The nearby Kim Giryang Martyr Memorial Hall focuses on remembering his life and martyrdom as a pilgrimage place; Kim Giryang Parish has a different role, keeping that name alive through daily Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

History & origins

Kim Giryang Parish was established in 2012 in response to the growing Catholic population in the Ido and Ara areas of Jeju City. According to the official diocesan history, a groundbreaking ceremony for the new parish took place on January 11, 2012, and formal approval followed on February 10. The new community was formed primarily from nine districts of Gwangyang Parish and one district of Donggwang Parish.

On September 2 of the same year, the first floor of the new church building was completed and began to be used, and a thanksgiving Mass for the establishment of the parish was celebrated on October 27. The initial building was prepared in stages so that liturgical and pastoral life could begin before the whole church complex was complete, with further expansion planned as the community grew.

An expansion of the church began in 2017 and was completed in 2018, followed by the dedication of the new church on November 16, 2019. The process illustrates how a new urban parish first formed its community and then completed its worship space in response to pastoral needs. From its beginning, the parish placed the name of Blessed Kim Giryang at its center, linking Jeju's martyr tradition with the daily life of a contemporary city parish.
