About this place
Jungang Cathedral is the cathedral of the Diocese of Jeju and the church of the cathedral parish serving the old downtown area of Jeju City. The diocesan parish directory lists the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patron. As a cathedral, it serves not only the ordinary Mass and sacramental life of parishioners but also as a principal church where diocesan liturgies and faith-related gatherings are held.
Located in the Gwandeok-ro area of Jeju City, the cathedral combines the functions of a local parish church and a diocesan center. Visitors can therefore understand it not simply as one parish church but as the liturgical center of the Diocese of Jeju, as well as a symbolic place where the Catholic community of Jeju gathers at the diocesan level.
History & origins
Jeju Jungang Parish was established on April 22, 1899. In June of that year it purchased land for a church at 108 Samdo 1-dong, and before 1912 it also secured the nearby Hyangcheong building, forming the site on which the present cathedral and diocesan offices stand. The establishment of this parish marked the beginning of a stable parish structure for Catholic pastoral life on Jeju.
The church building changed several times as the community grew. A Gothic-style church was built in 1930, another new church was constructed in 1969, and the present large cathedral was completed in 2000. The repeated rebuilding of the church on the same site reflects the expansion of the Catholic community and of the diocesan structure on Jeju.
Jungang Parish also served as an important mother parish in the development of parishes across the island. It separated Hannon Parish in 1900, Sinchang Parish in 1952, Dongmun Parish in 1967, Gwangyang Parish in 1970, and Seomun Parish in 1977. In 1988, Chuja Mission Station was transferred to Seomun Parish, helping establish the present parish boundaries.
The history of Jungang Cathedral therefore extends beyond the chronology of a single parish and is closely tied to the formation and expansion of the parish network of the Diocese of Jeju. The first parish founded at the end of the nineteenth century became the mother of several later parishes, while its church was repeatedly rebuilt and eventually became the cathedral seen today.
