About this place

Josu Mission Station is a Catholic mission station belonging to Sinchang Parish in the Diocese of Jeju, serving as a local community space for Catholics in Josu-ri, Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju City. The Catholic Church directory in Korea identifies it as a mission station of Sinchang Parish, and the Diocese of Jeju’s Mass guide also lists it separately as a mission-station Mass location.

Although it remains under the jurisdiction of the parish, Josu retains its own mission-station name and church space. In this way it enables Catholics living at some distance from the parish church to gather nearby for prayer and Mass, and illustrates how village-level Catholic communities in western Jeju remain connected to their parish.

History & origins

Josu Mission Station was established on November 3, 1957, as a mission station of Sinchang Parish. According to the Diocese of Jeju’s 2017 record marking its sixtieth anniversary, the community continued from its foundation around the Catholics of Josu-ri in Hangyeong-myeon and remained under Sinchang Parish at the time of the anniversary.

Its physical facilities were also developed over time. The same diocesan source states that the present church was dedicated on January 11, 2001, and that the mission station then included an education hall and facilities capable of accommodating groups overnight. This indicates that Josu developed beyond a small chapel used only for liturgy and became a place able to support retreats, formation, and community gatherings.

In November 2017, a thanksgiving Mass was celebrated for the sixtieth anniversary of the mission station. The sequence of its founding in 1957, the dedication of the new church in 2001, and the sixtieth-anniversary commemoration shows how this small Catholic community in western Jeju has sustained its life of faith over decades in close relationship with Sinchang Parish.
