About this place
Jocheon Catholic Church is the church of Jocheon Parish in the Diocese of Jeju and the center of the Catholic community whose jurisdiction covers all of Jocheon-eup in Jeju City. The diocesan parish directory names St. John the Baptist as the patron, and the church is where Catholics from the township’s various villages gather for Mass, the sacraments, and parish community life.
Because its pastoral territory is defined as the whole of Jocheon-eup, Jocheon Catholic Church connects Catholics across a broad area rather than serving only one village. Centered on a parish identity under the patronage of St. John the Baptist, it functions as a local pastoral base through which Catholics in northeastern Jeju remain connected with the diocese and continue their life of faith.
History & origins
The Catholic community of Jocheon began to take on an organized form in 1956, when Jocheon Mission Station was established under Jeju Jungang Parish. In June 1967, when Dongmun Parish was newly established, the mission station was transferred to the new parish and its pastoral jurisdiction changed accordingly.
As the community became established, its liturgical facilities were developed in stages. The first mission-station building was erected in 1975, and a new building was constructed in 1996. These two phases of construction reflect the way the Catholic community of Jocheon endured over a long period and gradually secured a more permanent place for worship and communal life.
On January 7, 1999, Jocheon Mission Station ended its long period as a mission community and was raised to parish status. The sequence from the mission’s foundation in 1956, the change of jurisdiction in 1967, the buildings of 1975 and 1996, and the parish elevation in 1999 summarizes the growth of the Jocheon community into an established parish in the eastern part of the Diocese of Jeju.
