About this place
Oedo Star of the Sea Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Jeju in the western urban district. Its territory includes Oedo 1-dong and 2-dong, Naedo-dong, Dopyeong-dong, and Gwangnyeong-ri in Aewol-eup. The Diocese of Jeju identifies Our Lady of Fatima as the parish patron. Serving the area where western Jeju City meets the eastern part of Aewol, it is a relatively recent parish formed through the reorganization of territory previously served by Nohyeong and Hagwi Parishes.
Today the parish is a local center where Catholics from Oedo and Gwangnyeong gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. The title “Star of the Sea” is an ancient Catholic title for the Virgin Mary, and together with the parish’s patronage of Our Lady of Fatima it gives the community a distinctly Marian character. The process by which the present name came into use and descriptions of particular works of church art are not included here because they are not sufficiently documented in the official diocesan sources used for this research.
History & origins
The independent parish serving the Oedo area emerged from a reorganization of parish boundaries as western Jeju City continued to grow. According to the official history of the Diocese of Jeju, the new parish was established on January 30, 2009, receiving the Oedo and Gwangnyeong areas from Nohyeong Parish and part of the Oedo area from Hagwi Parish. This was the point at which the Catholic community of Oedo moved from being a sector of existing parishes to becoming an independent pastoral unit.
The new parish celebrated its first Mass the following day, January 31, beginning its liturgical and communal life almost immediately after the administrative separation. Although the official chronology is brief, the consecutive dates of parish establishment and first Mass show that the canonical-pastoral reorganization and the practical beginning of the worshipping community occurred together. The parish subsequently took root within the territory that now includes Oedo 1- and 2-dong, Naedo-dong, Dopyeong-dong, and Gwangnyeong-ri.
The public diocesan parish page does not provide a detailed later chronology of church construction or changes in the parish name. Rather than supplementing the record with unverified dates or explanations, this history therefore centers on the securely documented foundation in 2009 and the first Mass that marked the community’s beginning.
