About this place
Hyodon Catholic Church is the parish church of Hyodon Parish in the Southern District of the Diocese of Jeju. Its pastoral territory includes Sinhyo-dong, Hahyo-dong, and Sanghyo-dong in Seogwipo, together with the Wimi, Sinrye, and Harye areas of Namwon-eup. Its patronal dedication is the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the parish currently has pastoral responsibility for Wimi mission station.
Hyodon Catholic Church serves as a pastoral center linking village communities in eastern Seogwipo with the western part of Namwon-eup, supporting the faithful through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life. Its dedication to the Visitation—the Gospel scene in which Mary visits Elizabeth—gives the parish a spiritual theme of encounter and service. The present structure of a parish together with a mission station also shows one way the Church in Jeju sustains Catholic life across a geographically broad area.
History & origins
A formal Catholic community in Hyodon was established in August 1957, when Seogwipo Parish created Hyodon mission station. The mission community grew for roughly three decades under Seogwipo Parish and was elevated to Hyodon Parish on February 10, 1988. At the time of that elevation, Namwon mission station was also transferred from Seogwipo Parish to Hyodon Parish.
As the Catholic community in Namwon developed, Namwon mission station itself was elevated to parish status in February 1997, and Hyodon Parish transferred part of its Namwon-eup territory to the new parish. Through this separation, Hyodon came closer to its present pastoral boundaries.
On December 24, 2021, Wimi mission station was newly established under Hyodon Parish. The history of Hyodon thus shows a mission station growing into an independent parish, later helping form another parish, and then taking responsibility for a new mission community. It reflects the continuing adjustment of pastoral structures in southern Jeju as local communities and patterns of settlement changed.
