About this place
Hwasun Catholic Church is the parish church of Hwasun Parish in the Western District of the Diocese of Jeju, with pastoral responsibility for the whole of Andeok-myeon in Seogwipo. Its patron saint is St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, priest and martyr, and it is the central church where Catholics of the Andeok area gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life.
Because its pastoral territory covers all of Andeok-myeon, Hwasun Catholic Church serves not only Hwasun-ri but also connects Catholic communities across the wider township. Its dedication to St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea's first native priest and a martyr saint, gives the parish an important spiritual identity rooted in the memory of the Korean martyrs and the priestly vocation.
History & origins
The Hwasun Catholic community was established on October 22, 1961, as a mission station under Moseulpo Parish. After many years as a mission community, it sold its former property on June 30, 1988, and purchased forest land in Hwasun-ri at the location of the present church, beginning a more substantial effort to provide its own church facilities.
The Hwasun mission church was completed on the new site in 1989. In 1990 the community also opened a kindergarten and undertook a form of local social service through the education of children. This development shows that the mission community expanded its presence beyond establishing a liturgical space and built broader ties with the local area.
After a long period of growth as a mission station, Hwasun was elevated to parish status on January 20, 2018. Its development from a small mission community in the 1960s, through the construction of its church and local educational work, to an independent parish reflects more than half a century of Catholic life taking root in the Andeok area.
