About this place
Hwabuk Catholic Church is the parish church of Hwabuk Parish in the Eastern City District of the Diocese of Jeju. Its pastoral territory includes Hwabuk 1-dong and 2-dong, Samyang 1-dong, 2-dong, and 3-dong, Doryeon 1-dong and 2-dong, Bonggae-dong, Yonggang-dong, and Hoecheon-dong. Its patron saint is St. Carlo Acutis. Serving several neighborhoods in eastern Jeju City, the parish church is the center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
Although Hwabuk is a comparatively recent independent parish, it has taken its place as a distinct pastoral community as eastern Jeju City has grown. Its present patronage by the young lay saint Carlo Acutis gives the parish a particular spiritual reference point associated with Eucharistic devotion and the living of the Gospel in ordinary life.
History & origins
Hwabuk Parish was established on September 11, 1997, when it was separated from Dongmun Parish, its mother parish. The creation of a new pastoral unit reflected the growth of the Catholic community in eastern Jeju City and the need for a parish distinct from the older Dongmun jurisdiction.
In December of the same year, a tent church was completed on the present site. Before a permanent church building was available, the new parish celebrated Mass and developed its community life in this temporary worship space, laying the foundations of the parish.
The Diocese of Jeju records that Hwabuk Parish continued from this beginning by strengthening parish organizations and missionary activity. Although the official chronology is brief, it clearly shows the parish's origins in separation from an older parish and the establishment of an interim church on its present site.
