About this place
Hallim Catholic Church is the parish church of Hallim Parish in the Western District of the Diocese of Jeju, with pastoral responsibility for eighteen villages in Hallim-eup, Jeju City. Its patronal dedication is to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the church serves as the center that brings together Catholics scattered across this broad western township.
Hallim has long been an important base in the history of Catholic mission in western Jeju. As neighboring parishes and mission stations grew and became independent, Hallim Parish repeatedly adjusted its pastoral boundaries. Today the church continues to support the faith of Catholics throughout Hallim-eup through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life, with devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary as an important element of its identity.
History & origins
The Catholic history of Hallim includes an earlier “Suwon mission station,” established around 1903, which was later closed. The direct foundation of the present parish community came in April 1951, when Hallim mission station was re-established under Sinchang quasi-parish.
Hallim mission station was elevated to Hallim Parish on April 1, 1954. At that time neighboring Sinchang Parish was reduced to mission-station status, before being restored as a parish in April 1957. As Catholic communities in western Jeju continued to grow, Hallim Parish later transferred parts of its territory to new pastoral units. Hagwi mission station was transferred to Gwangyang Parish in November 1970, and Geumak Parish was separated from Hallim in June 1982.
In February 1998, Aewol mission station was transferred to Hagwi Parish, and another boundary adjustment in June of that year produced the present territorial arrangement. Hallim Parish thus illustrates how an early Catholic mission center in western Jeju matured into a parish and, in turn, contributed to the growth of neighboring parishes and mission communities.
