About this place

The Jeju community of the Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs in Seohong-dong, Seogwipo, is the site officially presented by the congregation as Myeonhyeong House, with a retreat facility as well as a religious house and chapel. The Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs is a Korean-founded clerical religious congregation established on October 30, 1953, and it identifies service to the Church and society in the spirituality of the Korean martyrs as an important part of its vocation.

Myeonhyeong House is a center of the congregation's Jeju apostolate for retreats and pilgrimage. Its official information describes accommodations, a hall, and a chapel where visitors can stay and pray while experiencing Jeju's natural environment and Catholic holy places. The site can therefore be understood both as a home for the religious community and as a base for an apostolate that supports the spiritual life of the faithful and Catholic pilgrimage in Jeju.

History & origins

The Jeju apostolate of the Clerical Congregation of the Blessed Korean Martyrs began when the congregation entered Jeju on August 17, 1959. According to the Diocese of Jeju, in April 1967 the community demolished the former Hongro Catholic church building and constructed a cement-brick church on the site, gradually establishing a firmer base for its community and apostolate in Seogwipo.

On May 4, 1976, a three-story retreat house was built and named Bokja Hoegwan, or “Blessed Hall.” It became a principal setting for the congregation's retreat ministry in Jeju. In 1992 the facility was renamed Myeonhyeong House, using a spiritual term associated with the founder; the congregation's own chronology likewise records the renaming of the Seogwipo branch retreat house in January 1992.

The Jeju community later continued to develop its religious house and chapel facilities. The Diocese of Jeju records that on May 15, 2013, Bishop Peter Kang U-il presided over the blessing of the monastery and chapel of the congregation's Jeju branch in Seohong-dong. The site thus brings together the congregation's long presence in Jeju, its retreat apostolate, and the continuing life of its religious community.
