About this place

Hagwi Catholic Church is the parish church of Hagwi Parish in the Western City District of the Diocese of Jeju. According to the diocese's official information, the parish serves a number of communities in the eastern part of Aewol-eup, including Hagwi 1-ri and 2-ri, Sanggwi-ri, Yusuam-ri, Goseong-ri, Jangjeon-ri, Sogil-ri, Susan-ri, Sineom-ri, and Gueom-ri. Its patron saint is St. Paul Chong Ha-sang.

By bringing together Catholics scattered across these villages, Hagwi Catholic Church serves as the center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish community life. Its patronage by St. Paul Chong Ha-sang, one of the major Korean martyr saints, also gives the parish a clear spiritual connection with the memory of the Korean martyrs in the ordinary life of faith.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Hagwi began to take an official form around 1962, when Hagwi mission station was established under Hallim Parish. As the parish structure of Jeju City and western Jeju was reorganized, the mission station's jurisdiction changed several times.

When Gwangyang Parish was established in November 1970, Hagwi mission station became part of that parish. In February 1984 it was transferred again, this time to Sinjeju Parish. These changes accompanied the growth of Catholic communities in Jeju City and the Aewol area and the resulting adjustments in pastoral boundaries.

After beginning as a mission station, the Hagwi community was elevated to Hagwi Parish on January 25, 1998. Its path through several parish jurisdictions before becoming independent reflects the gradual formation of a stable pastoral base for Catholics in eastern Aewol-eup.
