About this place

Gwangyang Good Shepherd Catholic Church is the church of Gwangyang Good Shepherd Parish in the eastern urban district of the Diocese of Jeju. According to the diocesan directory, the parish serves parts of Ido 1-dong, Ido 2-dong, and Samdo 1-dong in Jeju City, and its patron is Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Located where older and newer parts of the city meet, it is a center of everyday Catholic life where parishioners gather around Mass and the sacraments.

Gwangyang Parish also holds an important place in the development of the parish network in eastern Jeju City. It once had pastoral responsibility for Hagwi and Gimnyeong mission stations and later gave rise to Donggwang Parish as the urban Catholic community expanded. Today's Gwangyang Good Shepherd Church is the liturgical center of that continuing parish, a place where local Catholics maintain worship, catechesis, and community life within this historical setting.

History & origins

Gwangyang Parish was established on November 9, 1970, when it was separated from Jeju Central Parish. It emerged as the city expanded and the growing Catholic population required a new pastoral unit. In the following years the parish developed through repeated adjustments of mission stations and territorial responsibility.

In 1981 Hagwi Mission Station was transferred to Sinjeju Parish. In 1988 Gwangyang received Gimnyeong Mission Station, which had previously been under Seongsanpo Parish. The present church building was also completed that year and was blessed on November 27. This period marked Gwangyang's consolidation as a stable pastoral center for the eastern part of Jeju City.

On April 30, 1995, Donggwang Parish was separated from Gwangyang. The creation of a daughter parish reflects the continued growth of the Catholic population and the finer pastoral organization of the expanding city. Since then Gwangyang Parish has continued to serve as a central Catholic community within its adjusted territory.
