About this place

Gosan Catholic Church is the church used by Gosan Christ the King Parish in the western district of the Diocese of Jeju. According to the diocesan directory, the parish serves parts of Gosan, Sanyang, Cheongsu, Jeoji, and Josu in Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju City, as well as the Sindo area of Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo, and it also cares for Cheongsu Mission Station. The parish patron is Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, priest and martyr.

Gosan Church serves as a parish center where Catholics across a broad rural area of western Jeju gather around Mass and the sacraments. It is also connected to the island's pilgrimage tradition, since the Diocese of Jeju's Kim Dae-geon pilgrimage route uses Gosan Church as one of its principal points. It is best understood not as an adjunct to a tourist destination but as both a center of everyday Catholic life in western Jeju and a parish church linked to the historical paths of Catholicism on the island.

History & origins

The Catholic community in the Gosan area began to take shape after the Korean War. According to the official history of the Diocese of Jeju, Gosan Mission Station was established in April 1955 under Hallim Parish. In April 1957, when Sinchang Parish resumed its parish status, the mission station was transferred to its care. The mission-station period was a formative stage in which a Catholic community took root across the broad rural area of western Jeju.

Gosan Mission Station was elevated to a parish on February 22, 1990. At the time of its establishment as a parish, it received Cheongsu Mission Station from Sinchang Parish and Mureung Mission Station from Moseulpo Parish. Further territorial adjustment followed, and on April 24, 1996, Mureung Mission Station was returned to Moseulpo Parish, producing the basic jurisdictional framework that continues today.

This history shows that Gosan Church did not emerge all at once as an independent community. It grew from a mission-station community that had sustained the faith life of Catholics in western Jeju. Today Gosan Parish continues that history together with Cheongsu Mission Station, preserving the pattern by which parishes and mission communities developed in close connection across the western part of the island.
