About this place

Gimnyeong Catholic Church is the church of Gimnyeong Holy Family Parish in the eastern urban district of the Diocese of Jeju. According to the official diocesan guide, the parish is dedicated to the Holy Family and serves Gimnyeong-ri, Dongbok-ri, Woljeong-ri, Haengwon-ri, and Deokcheon-ri. It is the parish center for Catholics living across the northeastern coastal and inland areas of Jeju.

Gimnyeong existed for many years as a mission-station community before developing into a parish. The current official parish page does not yet provide a detailed historical narrative, but diocesan and Catholic Church records show that the community passed through the pastoral care of several parishes, including Seongsanpo, Gwangyang, and Jocheon, before becoming independent. Gimnyeong Church can therefore be understood as an example of a small northeastern Jeju mission community that matured into a parish through a long period of pastoral development.

History & origins

Catholic life in Gimnyeong is recorded as beginning in 1958, when Gimnyeong Mission Station was established under Jeju Central Parish. As the parish structure of northeastern Jeju changed, the mission station's mother parish changed several times. When Seongsanpo Parish was established in 1973, Gimnyeong was one of its mission stations, and in 1988 it was transferred to Gwangyang Parish.

Gimnyeong later came under Jocheon Parish and was elevated to a parish on January 29, 2004. A Catholic Times report described it as the twenty-fourth parish of the Diocese of Jeju, while the history of Seongsanpo Parish records that Sehwa Mission Station came under the newly established Gimnyeong Parish at the time of the elevation.

This process shows how pastoral boundaries in northeastern Jeju were repeatedly adjusted as local communities developed. Gimnyeong began as a mission station cared for by a succession of mother parishes, eventually became an independent parish, and then took responsibility for a neighboring mission community. That movement from mission station to parish, and from being cared for to caring for another mission station, is the central pattern of its history.
