About this place

Geumak Catholic Church is the church of Geumak Clara Parish in the western district of the Diocese of Jeju. According to the diocesan guide, the parish serves Geumak-ri, Sangmyeong-ri, and Wollim-ri, and its patron is Saint Isidore, patron of farmers. The parish developed within the Catholic environment of Geumak, where the St. Isidore Farm and the Poor Clare community are located, giving the area a distinctive connection between rural life and religious-community spirituality.

Today Geumak Parish serves the sacramental and liturgical life of local Catholics while also offering a window into the distinctive history of rural Catholic ministry that grew around St. Isidore Farm and nearby religious communities. The parish church and the convent have separate functions, but they are closely linked within the broader story of how the Church in Geumak cultivated agriculture, community life, and prayer together.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Geumak began in 1957 as Geumak Mission Station under Hallim Parish. Official diocesan material explains that land purchases beginning in 1958 led to the establishment of St. Isidore Farm, and that the mission community developed in close relationship with this rural development project. The growth of the Catholic community and the transformation of local rural life therefore unfolded alongside one another.

In 1972 the Poor Clare community arrived in Geumak and settled near the farm. The presence of a contemplative religious community, together with the rural pastoral setting, gave Geumak a distinctive place within the Diocese of Jeju. Against this background the mission station gradually developed the foundations needed to become a parish.

On November 29, 1981, Geumak Mission Station was elevated to quasi-parish status, and on October 25, 1985, it became a full parish. Its history thus combines the common development from mission station to parish with the distinctive history of rural Catholic life shaped around St. Isidore Farm and neighboring religious communities.
