About this place

Gangjeong Mission Station is a Catholic mission community in the southern area of the Diocese of Jeju. The official Catholic directory in Korea lists it as a mission station of the Diocese of Jeju under Seogwibokja Parish. Its basic identity is therefore not that of an independent parish with a resident parish structure, but of a mission community that continues Mass, prayer, and communal faith life within the pastoral care of its mother parish.

Gangjeong Mission Station is also closely connected with the Diocese of Jeju's ministry for life and peace in Gangjeong Village. When the diocese blessed the St. Francis Peace Center in 2015, space for the mission station was included in the center, which was developed for prayer and liturgy as well as peace, spirituality, education, and solidarity activities. For this reason, Gangjeong is both a liturgical base for the local Catholic community and a place where the diocese's pastoral memory of seeking peace amid the conflicts and wounds of Gangjeong Village remains visible.

History & origins

The modern history of Gangjeong Mission Station developed together with the Diocese of Jeju's ministry for life and peace surrounding Gangjeong Village. The diocesan chronology records a groundbreaking in 2014 for the “Gangjeong Life and Peace Pastoral Center and Gangjeong Mission Station.” The diocese sought to establish a place where it could continue reflecting on the conflicts and wounds of Gangjeong through Catholic social teaching and sustain activities for peace and solidarity.

With the blessing of the St. Francis Peace Center in September 2015, this ministry gained a permanent base. A diocesan report from the time explains that the center included space for Gangjeong Mission Station, a Pope Francis exhibition area, displays related to Jeju history, and facilities for meetings and education. This is why the history of the mission station is linked not only to the construction of a chapel but also to the continuing stream of prayer and life-and-peace practice in Gangjeong.

The current Catholic directory lists a separate representative address for Gangjeong Mission Station, while diocesan materials on the Peace Center describe mission-station space inside the center. No official source found for this review explains the relationship between the two locations as a formal relocation or merger. The safest historical account is therefore limited to the verified development of the mission community and its connection with the Peace Center.
