About this place

Dongmun Church is the church of Dongmun Parish in the eastern urban district of the Diocese of Jeju. The diocese identifies Saint Anselm as its patron, and the parish serves Ildo 1-dong, Ildo 2-dong, and part of Geonip-dong in Jeju City. It functions as a local parish in the eastern part of the old city, where Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life.

Dongmun has also served as a mother parish from which several other parishes developed. Its meaning therefore lies not only in its present territorial ministry but also in its role as an important link in the expansion of Catholic communities across eastern Jeju City. Visitors can understand the church more fully by seeing it as a parish that has long organized local Catholic life and supported the growth of neighboring communities.

History & origins

Dongmun Parish was established on June 15, 1967, when it was separated from Jeju Central Parish. At its founding it also received responsibility for the Gimnyeong and Jocheon mission stations in northern Jeju, so its ministry initially extended beyond the eastern part of the city into Catholic communities in rural and coastal areas.

As the diocesan structure expanded, Dongmun’s territory was repeatedly adjusted. Gimnyeong Mission Station was transferred to Seongsanpo Parish on August 23, 1973. Part of Dongmun’s territory was then transferred when Donggwang Parish was established on April 30, 1995. Hwabuk Parish was created on September 11, 1997, and Jocheon Mission Station was elevated to parish status on January 7, 1999, bringing further division of the original territory.

These changes show that Dongmun was not simply a parish confined to one neighborhood but a mother parish in the growth and subdivision of Catholic communities in eastern Jeju. Its present boundaries are the result of successive daughter communities becoming independent, and its history reflects the broader expansion of pastoral organization in the eastern part of the diocese.
