About this place

Donggwang Church is the church of Donggwang Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in the eastern urban district of the Diocese of Jeju. The diocese identifies its patron as the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the parish serves parts of Ildo 2-dong, Ido 2-dong, Hwabuk 2-dong, and Ara-dong in Jeju City. At the meeting point of several urban neighborhoods, it functions as a local parish where Catholics gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.

Its essential identity is that of a territorial parish rather than a pilgrimage shrine or an independent religious house. The official parish name and patronal dedication to the Immaculate Heart of Mary express a Catholic spirituality that contemplates Christ through the heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Understanding this identity helps visitors see Donggwang Church as a place that sustains ordinary Catholic life in eastern Jeju City.

History & origins

Preparations for Donggwang Parish began in February 1995 with plans to establish a new parish in the Ildo area. According to the official diocesan history, Donggwang Parish was formally established on April 30 of that year, receiving parts of the territories and Catholic populations previously served by Dongmun and Gwangyang parishes. The new community thus emerged as parish boundaries were reorganized in response to the expansion of urban Jeju.

After the parish was founded, work continued to provide a church for the community. The diocese records that the church building was completed and dedicated on October 3, 1995. The sequence from preparation to parish establishment and church dedication within the same year shows how rapidly the new parish acquired both its organization and its physical center.

Donggwang Parish subsequently became one of the parishes of the Diocese of Jeju’s eastern urban district. Its origin in the redistribution of territory from Dongmun and Gwangyang illustrates the broader development of Jeju City parishes as pastoral boundaries changed with population and urban growth.
