About this place

Seobudong Catholic Church is the parish church of a Catholic community in the western part of Jecheon, Chungcheongbuk-do, within the Jecheon district of the Diocese of Wonju. Diocesan materials and the Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism identify it as an independent parish in the Jecheon area and record the Holy Spirit as its patron. The church is the local center where parishioners celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community life.

From its early years, Seobudong Parish developed not only by establishing its church facilities but also by cooperating with religious communities and extending its pastoral concern into education and social welfare. This background makes the church more than a place of worship: it is a community space in which faith and care for neighbors have accumulated in western Jecheon. Visitors can therefore understand the present parish in light of a longer local tradition of pastoral ministry and service.

The parish’s patron, the Holy Spirit, is also an important sign for understanding its liturgical and devotional identity. As an independent parish serving western Jecheon, Seobudong forms part of the wider pastoral network of the Diocese of Wonju’s Jecheon district together with neighboring parishes.

History & origins

Seobudong Parish was established on January 22, 1980, after being separated from Namcheondong and Uirimdong parishes as the Catholic population in the Jecheon area grew and pastoral boundaries were reorganized. The Encyclopedia of Korean Catholicism records that the Diocese of Wonju decided to establish a new parish in Jecheon as one of the projects marking the fifteenth anniversary of the diocese and entrusted the early pastoral ministry to the Missionary Society of St. Columban.

The first pastor secured a 2,344-pyeong church site on May 10 of the same year, and a church of about 170 pyeong was completed and dedicated on November 9, 1980. Within a relatively short time, the new parish acquired the basic space needed for liturgy and pastoral ministry and took root in western Jecheon.

On October 25, 1982, a convent was prepared and the Sisters of the Holy Family were invited, after which the parish broadened its activities in education and social welfare. In 1986 it used the former Bongyang mission-station building to establish the “House of Love” for elderly people without family support, expanding its role of care within the local community. The combination of catechetical work and care for neighbors shows the breadth of the parish’s early pastoral ministry.

As the parish territory developed, new Catholic communities were also organized. A mission-station building was constructed in the Baegun area in 1989, and when Baegun Parish became independent in 1992, Seobudong’s pastoral territory was adjusted again. This history shows Seobudong Parish both consolidating Catholic life in western Jecheon and helping new communities in surrounding areas develop toward independent parish status.
