About this place
Jayang 2-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul in Jayang-dong, Gwangjin-gu, belonging to the 8th Seongdong–Gwangjin District of the eastern Seoul pastoral region. Its patron is the Korean martyr St. Peter Kwon Deuk-in, and the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul participate in parish ministry.
The parish is a local center where Catholics in the eastern part of Jayang-dong gather for the Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its patronage by a Korean martyr gives the parish a distinctive identity centered on witnessing to faith in everyday life.
History & origins
Jayang 2-dong Parish was established on August 16, 1983. Both the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea directory and the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea give this date, while the encyclopedia records that the new parish was separated from Guuidong Parish.
Its establishment came amid urban growth and an expanding Catholic community in the Jayang area, which created the need for an additional pastoral center. Jayang 2-dong subsequently developed as an independent parish in Gwangjin-gu and continues in that role today.
