About this place

Jain Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Daegu in Jain-myeon, Gyeongsan, serving Catholics of Jain and the surrounding area as a center for Mass, the sacraments, faith formation, and community life. The archdiocese's official directory identifies Saint James the Apostle as the parish patron. Honoring an apostle remembered as a witness to the Gospel and a pillar of the early Church provides a spiritual reference for a community that seeks to preserve and hand on the faith in its local setting.

Jain forms a township-centered living area distinct from central Gyeongsan, making the parish an important local base where Catholics can participate in the Church's liturgical and sacramental life close to home. By sustaining faith across generations and fostering fellowship and mutual care, Jain Parish connects Catholics of the area as one local community of the Church.

History & origins

According to the official records of the Archdiocese of Daegu, Jain Parish was established on October 28, 1972. From that point, the Catholic community of the Jain area was formally situated within the archdiocesan pastoral structure as an independent parish, providing a stable framework for parish life in the southeastern rural part of Gyeongsan.

On October 24, 2021, marking the 49th anniversary of the parish's establishment, Bishop John Bosco Chang Shin-ho presided over a Mass of thanksgiving. The archdiocesan record explicitly calls the occasion the “49th anniversary of the establishment of the parish,” independently confirming the 1972 chronology. After nearly half a century, the community's thanksgiving liturgy offered an occasion to look back on the life of faith built up since its foundation and to carry it forward to another generation.

The two milestones—from the parish's establishment in 1972 to the 49th-anniversary Mass of thanksgiving in 2021—show that Jain Parish has continued for nearly half a century as an independent local Catholic community. Generations and patterns of daily life changed over those decades, but the tradition of remembering the foundation and gathering as a community to give thanks has remained an important way of connecting the parish's history with its present life of faith.
