About this place
Yonghyeon-dong Catholic Church is a parish in the Michuhol District of the Diocese of Incheon, serving as the local center for the liturgical and sacramental life of Catholics in Yonghyeon-dong and nearby areas. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea lists it as a parish of the diocese and records St. Joseph as its patron. The directory also notes the presence of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres at the parish.
St. Joseph, honored as the foster father of Jesus and protector of the Holy Family, adds to the parish's spiritual identity a sign of family life and faithful daily service. Over its long parish history, Yonghyeon-dong has served not only as a place for Mass and the sacraments but also as a setting for education and gatherings of local Catholics. It is one of the older parishes that help explain the development of Catholic community life in the Michuhol area.
History & origins
Yonghyeon-dong Parish was established on September 17, 1963. It became an independent parish relatively early in the development of the present-day Michuhol area and provided a stable base for the religious life of local Catholics over the following decades.
In the 1980s, the church premises were used not only for liturgy and catechesis but also for public discussion of issues affecting society. According to the timeline maintained by the Incheon Center for the Democracy Movement, a constitutional-amendment signature campaign was held at Yonghyeon-dong Church after Sunday Mass on April 20, 1986, with 319 parishioners signing. In December 1987, the church hosted photographs, video screenings, and a madanggeuk performance as part of events calling for an end to military dictatorship and for fair elections.
In 1988, the parish youth council organized a lecture on “the role of the Church in national reunification,” and in July of that year the church also hosted a lecture on pollution and environmental issues. These records show that Yonghyeon-dong Church at that time served not only the internal life of the Catholic community but also as a local Catholic space where democratization, reunification, and environmental concerns could be discussed.
These episodes represent one period within the parish's longer history, but they give concrete evidence of how Yonghyeon-dong Church engaged with the surrounding community. Alongside the liturgical life accumulated since its establishment, these social records form an important part of understanding the parish's historical character.
