About this place
The Ganghwa community of the Institute of Kkottongnae Sisters of Jesus is listed in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea as a religious community in the Diocese of Incheon and is located in the Ganghwa Kkottongnae area of Yangsa-myeon, Ganghwa-gun. The institute grew out of Kkottongnae as a consecrated community whose spirituality places at its center service to people who have no one to depend on and who may not even be able to seek help for themselves.
The significance of this community lies in the meeting of religious life and the local apostolate of care. Grounded in communal prayer and consecrated life, the sisters continue the Kkottongnae spirit of serving Christ in the least among their neighbors. The place is therefore best understood not as an independent parish church but as a women's religious community that supports the apostolate of Ganghwa Kkottongnae.
History & origins
The roots of the Kkottongnae religious community can be traced to the late 1970s, when people who wished to live with and serve neighbors in desperate need began gathering at Kkottongnae. In 1981, two women who wanted to dedicate their lives to this service joined the community, giving its common life a clearer foundation.
On December 27, 1986, Bishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk of the Diocese of Cheongju canonically approved the community of volunteers devoted to Kkottongnae under the name “Kkottongnae Brothers and Sisters of Jesus.” The first profession of vows followed on February 2, 1988, giving the religious community a more established institutional form.
Expansion to Ganghwa is documented in 1998. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia lists “Ganghwa Kkottongnae (1998)” among Kkottongnae's regional works, and the current Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists the “Ganghwa Community” of the Institute of Kkottongnae Sisters of Jesus in the same area. This sequence shows how the congregation's vocation of living with and serving poor neighbors, first developed in Eumseong, extended into a concrete apostolic setting in Ganghwa.
