About this place
The Jesuit community known as Baonae House in Tongjin, Gimpo, is a religious community of the Society of Jesus within the Diocese of Incheon. It is also listed separately as a Jesuit community in the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea, and its basic identity is that of a home where Jesuits continue their common life and prayer.
In the Tongjin area, the Jesuits also operate the Gimpo Yiutsari Migrant Support Center at a separate location, carrying out an apostolate that seeks to become good neighbors to migrants. Baonae House and Yiutsari are different facilities, but considering the Jesuits' community life and migrant apostolate together helps explain the regional and ecclesial context in which Baonae House is situated.
History & origins
According to a history of the Jesuits in Korea published by the Sogang University Alumni Association, Baonae House moved from Mansu-dong, Incheon, to Gimpo in 2010. In the same year, the migrant-worker ministry “Yiutsari” also moved from Gimpo to Tongjin, helping the Jesuits' local apostolate and community life take clearer root in the Gimpo-Tongjin area.
The same record states that Baonae House was recognized as an independent community in 2018. This marked more than a change of residence: it was a step in establishing the house as a Jesuit community capable of sustaining its common life in the Gimpo area.
Today, the Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea separately lists Baonae House as a Jesuit community in the Diocese of Incheon and confirms its address on Seoam-ro 194beon-gil. Shaped by the move to Gimpo in 2010 and recognition as an independent community in 2018, the house remains a place that represents the continuing communal presence of the Society of Jesus in Gimpo.
