History & origins

The history of the Ganghwa Retreat House began within the expansion of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart’s work in Korea and the growing need for religious formation. After beginning its Korean mission in 1985, the congregation broadened its ministries to include parish work, maritime pastoral care, and service to migrant workers. As the number of candidates increased, the need grew for a dedicated place combining formation with retreat ministry.

The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that on September 10, 1996, the congregation established a formation house and retreat house in Bureun-myeon, Ganghwa. From the beginning, the retreat house was created alongside the formation function of the Ganghwa community, bringing together two purposes in one place: the formation of members of the congregation and an apostolic space for prayer and retreat.

When the Korean section was elevated to a region in 1999, the congregation’s institutional base in Korea became more stable. The current official directory still lists the Ganghwa Community and formation house together with the Ganghwa Retreat House, showing the continuity of the combined formation-and-retreat structure established in the 1990s.

Establishing a formation house and retreat house together in Ganghwa marked a transition from simply sending missionary personnel to building a long-term community capable of forming new members within Korea. In that process, the retreat house became a place connecting the congregation’s internal work of formation with an outward-facing spiritual apostolate for the wider Church. The current directory confirms this historical continuity by listing the retreat house as a distinct facility while explicitly naming the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart as the responsible congregation. The retreat space established alongside the formation house in 1996 has developed into a separately listed retreat and prayer facility while remaining spiritually and institutionally connected with the congregation’s Ganghwa community.
