About this place
Yeonsu Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon and is dedicated to Saint Joseph as its patron. The official Catholic directory of Korea lists it as a parish serving the Yeonsu area, with a community of the Missionary Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing, Seoul Priory, participating in parish ministry. In addition to the celebration of Mass and the sacraments, the parish sustains catechesis for those preparing to enter the Church, Sunday school, Bible groups, Eucharistic adoration, and other forms of faith formation.
The parish’s own guidance also places charitable and welfare activities, including the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, within its mission alongside liturgy, the sacraments, and religious education. Yeonsu Parish can therefore be understood not simply as a church building but as the local Catholic community where the faithful celebrate the liturgy, deepen their faith, and serve their neighbors.
The parish’s published guide to Catholic life includes not only sacramental practices such as confession, baptism, confirmation, marriage, and care of the sick, but also the Legion of Mary, Cursillo, marriage enrichment, scholarships, and charitable service. This range of activities shows that Yeonsu is a local parish combining liturgical worship with formation and service.
History & origins
Yeonsu Parish was formed during a period when the Songdo coastal new-town development and large apartment projects in the Yeonsu area were rapidly increasing both the resident population and the number of Catholics. The parish’s own history explains that the community emerged naturally from these local changes and records its establishment on February 14, 1994. Fr. Pius Lee Deok-sang served as the first pastor.
The parish initially began under the name Dongchun 1-dong Parish. As Catholics in the newly developed residential districts gathered for Mass and organized parish life, the community grew quickly. The parish’s twentieth-anniversary records preserve the succession of its early pastoral periods and show how the community became established while responding to the changing neighborhood.
The formation of Yeonsu Parish thus reflects both the urban expansion of southern Incheon and the growth of the local Catholic community. As a new residential area took shape, an independent parish was established within it and gradually developed a stable pattern of liturgy, catechesis, devotional life, and apostolic activity.
The parish’s own introduction states that the community later grew to more than ten thousand Catholics. This shows that the expansion of new residential districts was not merely an administrative change but led to substantial growth in parish size and pastoral needs. Yeonsu thus became an example of a parish born in a development zone and, over time, established as a stable Catholic community of the area. This growth is also reflected in the development of the parish’s name. Beginning under the local designation “Dongchun 1-dong,” the community came to be identified as Yeonsu Parish, a name representing a broader Catholic community beyond individual apartment developments.
