About this place
Yeonpyeongdo Catholic Church is an island parish of the Diocese of Incheon and is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It celebrates Mass and the sacraments for Catholics on Yeonpyeong Island and serves as a stable center of Catholic life in a community geographically separated from the mainland.
Catholic life on Yeonpyeong Island had already taken root through mission-station activity and evangelization before the community acquired parish status. The present church continues that longer tradition of island mission. The current official directory and historical church sources, however, record different dates for the establishment or restoration of the parish, so the chronological history needs to be treated separately from its present identity.
The early missionary record preserved in the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia also shows local participation in forming the faith community and in educational activity. Because of this long background, Yeonpyeongdo Church is also a place that illustrates how Catholic mission took root as a local community on the West Sea islands. Until the chronological conflict is resolved, however, it is appropriate not to present a single “foundation year” as settled fact in the description of the present parish.
