About this place
Yeonhui-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon, forming a Catholic community in the Yeonhui and Simgok area of northwestern Incheon. It is listed as an independent parish in the official Catholic directory of Korea and serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The present church building is notable for expressing the theme of a “praying community” through architecture. The Catholic Times described a roof recalling a folded Mass veil, decorative motifs of grains of wheat, and stained glass using symbols of the Twelve Apostles. These elements help visitors understand the church not merely as a meeting place, but as a space designed for liturgy, prayer, and the experience of Christian symbolism.
These architectural elements are not isolated decoration; they can be understood as devices connecting the parish’s theme of a “praying community” throughout the sacred space. Yeonhui-dong is therefore both an active parish church and a faith space in which the roof, sacred furnishings, and stained glass visually express themes of liturgy and community.
History & origins
Yeonhui-dong Parish was established in January 2009 when it was separated from Geomam-dong Parish amid growth in the Catholic population and adjustments to pastoral territories in the Incheon Seo-gu area. After becoming an independent parish, the community began the process of securing a permanent church and building the institutional base of the new parish.
Construction continued over several years. In November 2014, the new church was completed and the community celebrated its first Mass after moving in. The building, with one basement level and three floors above ground, provided a main worship space, catechetical rooms, offices, a choir area, and other facilities needed for liturgy and formation.
On September 20, 2015, Bishop Choi Ki-san of Incheon presided over the dedication of the new church. With the completion and dedication of its own church after the period following separation, the parish gained a stable physical base for liturgy, education, and community life.
Contemporary reporting states that the new church had a total floor area of 2,464 square meters. Completion of construction was not the end of the process: the community first moved in and began using the building, and the church was later liturgically dedicated in a ceremony presided over by the diocesan bishop. These two stages show the distinction between completing the building and formally dedicating it as a Catholic church. There was an interval of roughly five years between the establishment of Yeonhui-dong Parish and the completion of its church. This was the period in which the newly separated community organized parish life and prepared for construction. The sequence from moving into the building in 2014 to its dedication in 2015 gives a concrete example of how a new parish may begin first as a community and only later complete its own permanent liturgical space.
