About this place
Yeongjong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon and the center of a Catholic community with a long history on Yeongjong Island. The parish’s official website confirms its present location on the island, while the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records Saint Barnabas as its patron. Its most important present identity is that of a parish where island Catholics celebrate Mass and the sacraments and sustain a shared life of faith.
The roots of Catholic life on Yeongjong Island reach back to the mission-station period at the beginning of the twentieth century. The present parish is therefore not simply a recent new-town church, but a place shaped over generations by island evangelization, mission-station life, parish elevation, and later change. Even after the opening of Incheon International Airport and extensive urban development transformed the surrounding area, it continues the older stream of Catholic life on the island.
The parish website’s separate sections for a brief parish history and a broader history of Catholicism on Yeongjong show that the community itself treats this long past as an important part of its identity. The present church carries out the functions of a modern parish in a transformed island environment while also preserving the memory of Catholic life reaching back to the mission-station period.
History & origins
The documented history of the Catholic community on Yeongjong Island reaches back to 1901, when Fr. Joseph Maraval of Dapdong Parish established the Yeongjong mission station in the Dolgwakjae area. The faithful built a mission hall in 1910, and in 1916 Bishop Gustave Mutel, Apostolic Vicar of Seoul, celebrated Mass there. The community subsequently passed under the care of different parishes while maintaining Catholic life on the island.
The Yeongjong mission station was elevated to parish status in 1965, with Maryknoll missionary Fr. James Sinnott appointed as the first pastor. A church building was completed in 1967, giving the parish a permanent setting for liturgy and pastoral work. Changes in island population and diocesan circumstances led to its reduction to mission-station status again in 1981, but it was restored as a parish in July 1984.
Yeongjong Island later underwent major transformation with the construction of Incheon International Airport and large-scale development. As the resident population grew and new residential areas appeared, a new Airport Parish was separated from Yeongjong Parish in January 2002. The community’s history, stretching over more than a century, thus moves from a small mission station to parish status, back to a mission station, then to restoration and the later creation of another parish, reflecting both social change on the island and changes in Catholic pastoral organization.
Around the time the community first became a parish, its history also included a medical apostolate in addition to liturgical life. The encyclopedia records that Sacred Heart Yeongjong Hospital was established in 1965 and operated until 1976. At a time when access to medical care on an island could be difficult, this shows the parish community’s involvement not only in worship and evangelization but also in an apostolate closely connected with the daily needs of residents. This episode broadens the parish history beyond the story of church buildings alone.
