About this place

Yeongheung Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon and has Saint Peter the Apostle as its patron. The official Catholic directory of Korea lists Yeongheung as an independent parish and records a mission station under its care. Because the parish is located on Yeongheung Island in the West Sea, it has a clear role as a diocesan pastoral center where island Catholics sustain their faith through Mass and the sacraments.

The community is formed within an island setting quite different from that of a large urban mainland parish. For local residents and Catholic visitors, the church is both a place of liturgy and the institutional base through which the Diocese of Incheon maintains pastoral care for the Catholic community in the Yeongheung area. Its connection with a mission station also reflects the particular character of island and coastal ministry.

The use of the island name “Yeongheung” as the parish name also makes its present identity clear. Because the official directory records a mission station under its care, the parish can be understood as a pastoral unit linking liturgical life at the main church with a smaller outlying Catholic community. Visitors should distinguish the parish church from its mission station while recognizing both as connected within the same diocesan pastoral structure.

History & origins

Yeongheung Parish was established in 2005 as part of a reorganization of parishes in the Diocese of Incheon. At that time the diocese created four new parishes—Daegot, Bakchon-dong, Songdo International City, and Yeongheung—with Yeongheung officially beginning on December 5. The new community was separated from Daebu Parish and became an independent parish.

At its establishment, the parish territory covered all of Yeongheung-myeon in Ongjin County as well as Pungdo-dong in Ansan. This arrangement was a diocesan pastoral response to Catholics living in an island and coastal environment. The creation of the parish gave the faithful in the Yeongheung area a more local base for parish life despite the distance and transportation conditions separating the islands from older parish centers.

Yeongheung Parish subsequently took its place within the Diocese of Incheon’s pastoral care of island communities. The official directory and contemporary Catholic press clearly support the circumstances of its separation and establishment; later detailed construction history could not be verified sufficiently in this research and has therefore not been added.

The fact that the Diocese of Incheon established several parishes on the same date shows that the creation of Yeongheung Parish was not an isolated event but part of broader diocesan growth and a reorganization of pastoral territories. As the number of parishes increased, Yeongheung Island was reorganized from an outlying part of the Daebu area into the center of its own parish ministry. Contemporary reporting noted that the creation of the new parishes brought the total number of parishes in the Diocese of Incheon, including quasi-parishes, to 102. This figure does not describe the size of Yeongheung itself; rather, it places the parish within a broader mid-2000s diocesan effort to refine its parish network in response to urban expansion and pastoral needs in island and outlying areas.
