About this place
Yeonan Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon and is dedicated to Our Lady under the title “Star of the Sea.” The official Catholic directory of Korea lists Yeonan as an independent parish and records a mission station under its care. Located in the harbor and coastal-terminal area, the parish has a distinctive character as a Catholic community serving people whose daily life is closely connected with the waterfront.
The parish name and its Marian patronage fit naturally with this local setting. Centered on Mass and the sacraments, Yeonan Parish is also part of the diocesan pastoral network linking the mainland parish with Catholic communities in coastal and island areas. Visitors can therefore understand it as a local parish where the life of Incheon’s port district and the Catholic community meet.
The official directory’s listing of a mission station under Yeonan Parish shows that the parish is more than a single church building: it is a pastoral unit linking the parish church with a smaller mission community. Visitors can therefore distinguish the church itself from the mission station under its care while understanding both as connected within the same diocesan community.
History & origins
Yeonan Parish was established as the population and number of Catholics grew in the apartment districts created around Incheon’s coastal terminal and reclaimed waterfront. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that it was separated from Sungui-dong Parish in February 1984, at the same time as Yonghyeon 5-dong Parish. It was first called “Yeonan Pier Parish” and was later renamed Yeonan Parish.
The new community had no church of its own at first. Its first Mass was celebrated in a parishioner’s home, and a rented commercial space was later used as a temporary church. As the parish prepared a permanent liturgical space, the church site was blessed in May 1986. In December of the same year, the community celebrated its first Mass in the still-unfinished new church and began to move its center of parish life there.
The new church was formally dedicated in June 1987. In 1991, educational and rectory-related facilities were expanded, strengthening the parish’s pastoral base. The history of Yeonan Parish thus follows a community that emerged in a newly developed harbor district, became independent, and moved from homes and temporary quarters into its own church and supporting facilities.
Parish statistics add another dimension to this development. The encyclopedia records 1,160 Catholics in 1984, the year the parish was established, and 1,560 by 1987, around the time the new church was dedicated. Although the figures later changed with population movement, the successive creation of a church and educational facilities shows how quickly the community built a stable pastoral base in the newly developed harbor district. A notable feature of Yeonan’s early development is the step-by-step change in its liturgical setting: from Mass in a home, to a rented commercial unit, to use of the unfinished church, and finally to a formally dedicated church. The community maintained the liturgy in whatever space was possible while its size and resources were still developing, and then gradually secured a permanent church and educational facilities. This makes the process by which the new parish became established especially clear.
