About this place
Yeokgok Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon located in Goean-dong, Bucheon, and belongs to the Bucheon 1 pastoral district. The official Korean Catholic directory identifies the Annunciation as its patronal dedication and records the participation of the Sisters of the Korean Martyrs in parish ministry. It is a local Catholic community center for believers in the Yeokgok, Goean, and Beombak area who gather around the Mass and the sacraments.
A parish dedicated to the Annunciation takes Mary’s acceptance of the word of God as an important spiritual sign for the community. In the residential districts of southeastern Bucheon, Yeokgok Parish connects generations and families and provides a pastoral setting in which Catholics participate in catechesis, liturgy, and community life as members of the diocese and the universal Church.
History & origins
Yeokgok Parish was established by dividing territory from Sosa Parish as the Catholic population of the Bucheon area increased. Both the official Korean Catholic directory and a 1983 Catholic Times report on the dedication of the church state that Yeokgok Parish began on February 25, 1981, after separation from Sosa Parish. Its early territory was centered on Yeokgok-dong, Goean-dong, and Beombak-dong.
Soon after its establishment, the new parish began building a dedicated church. Ground was broken in March 1982, and after roughly one year and eight months of construction, the new church was dedicated on November 20, 1983, in a liturgy presided over by Bishop William J. McNaughton of Incheon. The building was constructed with one basement level and two above-ground floors, and the dedication included the unveiling of a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Completing its own church less than three years after the parish began reflects the rapid growth of the Yeokgok Catholic community at the time. The history of Yeokgok Catholic Church is thus the story of a newly separated community that quickly built its own church and pastoral foundation and took root as an independent parish in southeastern Bucheon.
