About this place

Yanggok Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Incheon located in Yangchon-eup, Gimpo, and belongs to the Gimpo pastoral district. The official Korean Catholic directory identifies the Annunciation as its patronal dedication and records the participation of the Daughters of Mary in parish ministry. In an area where urban and rural life meet in northeastern Gimpo, the parish serves as a Catholic community center connecting local believers with the diocese.

Its dedication to the Annunciation points to Mary’s acceptance of God’s call as an important spiritual sign for the community. Yanggok Parish provides a place where Catholics gather around the Mass and the sacraments and where families and generations remain connected amid changes in the surrounding community. Its continued presence through the growth and transformation of the Gimpo area gives the parish particular local significance.

History & origins

The official Korean Catholic directory records March 25, 1987, as the establishment date of Yanggok Parish. The Catholic roots of the area, however, are described as much older than the parish itself. In a 2012 article marking the twenty-fifth anniversary, the pastor at the time said that the Catholic history of Yanggok reached back to the 1880s.

After the parish was established, the community developed amid construction, urbanization, and population movement in the Gimpo area. On May 27, 2012, the parish celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary with Mass. In preparation, parishioners undertook projects including handwriting the Bible, praying the Rosary, and compiling a twenty-fifth-anniversary history. The report that roughly half a million decades of the Rosary were offered shows an effort to make the anniversary a period of common prayer and reflection rather than only a celebration.

At the time, the parish itself recognized rapid development and the arrival of new urban residents as a major pastoral context. The history of Yanggok Catholic Church thus joins older local Catholic roots with the establishment of an independent parish and the continuing effort to shape community identity and pastoral life amid urban change.
